The Times of London named BigOven to its list of Top 50 Websites for Food and Drink.
- 2013 Readers Choice Winner, Best Recipe App
- 2012 Readers Choice Winner, Best Recipe App
- 2011 Readers Choice Winner, Best Recipe App
In addition, we’ve received some nice recognition recently from these national publications:
- InStyle Magazine called BigOven a “Cooking App that Sizzles” in their March 2013 print edition
- Mashable called us “your best friend in the kitchen” in a great overview of our apps, and also put us on the list of Top 10 Android Apps for Your Downtime
- USAToday put BigOven #1 on their list of the only cooking apps you’ll ever need
BigOven is a community effort – your recipes, photos, ratings and product suggestions help us continue to design and deliver great solutions for home cooks everywhere. We really appreciate the recognition – we’re working very hard to deliver to you the finest solution for recipe organization, meal planning and grocery shopping. BigOven is available for free download for iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android, Android Tablet, Kindle Fire, Windows Phone and NOOK at www.bigoven.com/mobile.
We were pleased to read this week that both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal each independently put BigOven in the spotlight with reviews of cooking apps. It’s always a pleasant surprise when this happens without any reach-out whatsoever on our part – just recognition of BigOven’s growing popularity and usefulness for home cooks.
From the New York Times (August 29, 2012):
“A Shelf Full of Cookbooks at Your Fingertips”
The BigOven app, free on iOS and Android is a great demonstration of why recipe apps can be better than recipe books. It lists more than 250,000 recipes, with a powerful search engine that offers many options for finding a recipe you’d like. There’s a “leftovers” search trick, excellent for using up spare food in your refrigerator. And if you just want to be surprised by a new recipe, you can see recipes that Big Oven users nearby are cooking, or dive straight into a random one.
The app also comes with a suite of tools to make cooking a meal easier — like its virtual grocery list, based on your chosen recipes. If you’re a keen menu planner, then you may also love its calendar-based planning feature. The recipes are clearly arranged. The app looks just like a traditional glossy book — right down to its photos and clearly marked sections telling you how many people each recipe serves, its calorie content and its reviews.
The New York Times article mentions that the Windows Phone app “contains only 170,000 recipes”. To clarify, that’s simply the product name as it exists on the Windows Phone marketplace. The name hasn’t been updated recently. In fact, the Windows Phone app, as with all our apps, access the same complete BigOven recipe archive, now with over 300,000 recipes.
And the Wall Street Journal named BigOven one of the “Best Apps for Preparing a Meal” in their special mobile apps section on August 26 2012:
“Best Apps to Prepare a Meal”
BigOven.com’s free BigOven app gives you access to more than 250,000 recipes from home cooks… and a grocery list that show[s] you what you’ll need to whip up the dishes. [It] can think up ideals for meals based on the leftovers you have in your kitchen.

In giving BigOven the award, several parents joined BigOven PRO in a blind test over the course of several weeks and explored all its key features – menu planning, grocery list making, recipe posting, customer service, the mobile apps, and more.

Read what the reviewers said about BigOven and BigOven PRO membership:
I’ve really enjoyed using the BigOven app. I am not a natural cook who likes to experiment with foods so this app was made for me. This is great because I can easily plan my weekly meals and grocery lists. My favorite feature is you can enter three ingredients that you have and it will bring up a list of recipe ideas. I love this app!
BigOven Pro is a website full of ideas and opportunities. It is much more than a basic recipe database. My favorite features included the ability to meal plan, complete with a picture to remind me what my finished product could/should look like, the ability to post recipes either publicly or privately, and so much more. It also has a free app that you can download to make life in the grocery store easy! The best part of BigOven is, these recipes are posted and have been made by people just like me. I don’t need to be a gourmet chef, with specialty ingredients in my pantry. Everyone can find recipes that they can make successfully, and that will taste great too! It’s something that I’ll be using for years to come.
I love anything that takes the guess work out of what to make for dinner. The grocery planner makes shopping easier by ensuring I get everything I need in one trip.
