Still using a paper list at the grocery store? You’re missing out. Go right from recipes to automatically-sorted time-saving lists. Text your list to someone else, or even share your list within your household. Watch this brief demo to see some of the things you can do with BigOven’s easy-to-use grocery list:
Are you a recipe collector? There are plenty of options for storing recipes you find on the Internet; a frequent question we get here at BigOven is how we compare to all the other ways of storing and finding recipes.
The short answer is that BigOven is a complete recipe, grocery list and menu planning system for home cooks. It doesn’t treat your recipes as a general “document”, it treats it as a structured recipe, with an ingredients section, an instructions section, nutrition information, images and more. BigOven brings your recipes to you — whether it be at the grocery store, kitchen counter, on vacation, or your living room sofa. Companion apps for iPhone, Android device, iPad provide full functionality, as does your web browser. Items added or changed on one device show up on the other devices, reflecting the changes you’ve made. You can easily add or remove recipes from your grocery list. You can resize recipes up or down. You can even invite members of your household to share and edit your grocery list and menu plan.
Alernative Ways to Organize Recipes
The three basic options we’ve seen people use are:
- Pinning sites (e.g., Pinterest)
- Document organizers (e.g., Google Docs, OneNote or Evernote)
- Dedicated recipe apps (e.g., BigOven)
While pinning sites and document managers are usually simple and free, the disadvantage of these approaches is that they don’t really know it’s a recipe. As a result, they don’t let you easily resize it up or down, don’t let you add it to a grocery list (and have items automatically sorted by aisle for you), they don’t let you see nutritional information, they don’t let you convert it to or from metric, don’t consolidate ratings very easily, and many other features.
|Pinning sites: (e.g., Pinterest)||See a recipe on the Internet? Pin it for a handy reference. You can search your recipes later.||Easy to use Can't create a grocery list Can't create a menu plan Can't resize recipes Can't convert to metric Can't search excluding ingredients Can't calculate nutrition|
|Notes apps: (e.g., Evernote, OneNote or Google Docs)||Easily paste in recipe documents. They're optimized for general document search. They don't know it's a recipe and it isn't structured as such. Easy to paste in images and complete copies of the original recipe. While they have good simple search, you can't do a structured search like "all my recipes that have chicken but don't have mustard in the ingredients list"||Generally sync documents across devices Can't create a grocery list Can't create a menu plan Can't resize recipes Can't convert to metric Can't search excluding ingredients Can't calculate nutrition|
|Dedicated Recipe Organizers (e.g., BigOven)||Built for recipes, grocery shopping and menu planning. Sync your grocery list within a household; add recipes to the grocery list or menu plan.||It's a free service for up to 50 recipes, but more recipes than that requires BigOven Pro.|
What sets BigOven apart is that we make the entire process of searching, making a grocery list, resizing recipes, and planning a menu simple, from start to finish. BigOven is a home cooking app designed by home cooks. We wanted it to be simple to use, and synchronize your recipe box, recipe folders, menu plan, grocery list and more available to you wherever you need it.

See all your recipe notes at a glance
Want to jot notes to yourself about a recipe? BigOven Pro members can keep private notes on recipes for tweaks, who you served it to and what they thought, or other general things you might not want to share publicly.
For quite some time, you’ve been able to jot notes on recipes, and they’re right there on the recipe detail screen when needed.
But sometimes, it’s useful to see them all at a glance. You can now view all your notes in one place on BigOven.com, in your “My Recipes” view. Recipe Notes are private, and not shown to anyone else. You can keep your own notes on who-liked-what, or what tweaks you’d like to make, what to serve it with, or maybe which guest(s) you served it to and what they thought of it.
How to add a recipe note
You can add or edit notes on any recipe detail page, via the web or via the BigOven app. Whatever you enter will sync across your devices.
How to view all your recipe notes
If you’d like to view all your recipe notes in one place, head to your “My Recipes” view, and click the (new) Note icon.
You’ll see them all in a paged list, most recent first.

Let’s get planning!
We’re proud to be introducing a brand new version of our Android app next week! Want to get a sneak peek now? Join our Early Access Program.
The BigOven app for Android is a ground-up rewrite that we started in our studio over a year ago. We’ve taken the things you love about BigOven — recipe lookup, shopping and sharing — looked closely at each area, and made them better. We’ve streamlined them and added some important new capabilities. We’ve added new ways to see the activity of the cooks you like, follow new ones, and see the activity on recipes most relevant to you. Our goal is to make it even easier for you to get a delicious homemade meal on the dinner table.
We aim to be the most-used, best-loved app for home cooks. We want to help the home cook as they cycle through discovery, planning, shopping, preparation and sharing meals every day of the week. We constantly look at each of those activities to see how we can make it easier.
We need your feedback below
We’ve put a lot of work into this app, but we know we couldn’t possibly get it all perfect in one go. So please, help us help you. Our development team is reading the comments section below, so let us know if we’ve missed something important to you and we’ll be sure to consider it for a future update. We plan updates for the indefinite future, so let us know what would make your tasks as a home cook, menu planner and grocery shopper easier!

Get inspired by your friends, family and favorite food bloggers
Now, when you join or link by Facebook, you’ll see all your friends that use BigOven, and can follow them. When you follow a cook, you’ll see recipes they love (rate 4 or 5 stars) right in your home screen feed. You’ll also see recipes added by your favorite bloggers, who you can also follow right from the app.
BigOven makes recommendations for you the more you use it
BigOven will bubble up recommendations based on how you’re using it. Our goal is to help you get unstuck, and eliminate that “what am I going to make tonight?” problem we all encounter.
Getting around BigOven is easier
BigOven’s navigation has been streamlined to get you quickly and easily from one feature to another. Whether it’s getting recipe ideas on your home screen, accessing your own recipes, creating a grocery list, making a meal plan or checking on messages, it’s all within easy reach with our updated navigation bar.
Activity keeps you up-to-date
View your messages in one place. Find Facebook friends who are also on BigOven. Get a message if someone comments on a recipe you’ve posted, if an action has been done on a recipe you’ve commented on, or if someone has @mentioned you. Personalize your profile page by adding a photo, see your recipe count, along with how many cooks you follow and how many cooks are following you.
Find recipes even faster with all-new Search
Looking for a recipe? Just type in the title, ingredients or any keyword. You can get back to all the recipes you’ve viewed recently by tapping on the magnifying glass and then “All Recipes”. More recipes are displayed on each screen, and related recipes are shown to you right on the recipe detail screen.
Searching is faster
Some searches of your recipe collection are done locally on your phone, making them very fast. Plus, with an all-new search back-end, you’ll find many common searches are faster than in the old app, particularly seasonal collections.
Autocomplete saves you typing
BigOven now autocompletes your recipe searches with some of the more common recipe titles. (If you don’t see it suggested for you, be sure to search anyway; these are just the most common recipe titles.)
BigOven remembers your most recently viewed recipes
Enter your search, and you can choose to target all the recipes or just your own recipes. BigOven shows you the most recent recipes you’ve viewed. And a handy autocomplete will suggest searches for you based on what you’re typing.
Tap the magnifying glass and choose how you’d like to search within the app. Are you on a quest to discover new inspiration from BigOven’s 350,000 recipes? Or would you prefer to locate a specific recipe in your recipe box? Or would you like to find a particular cook, blog or website on BigOven? We have many options for you to choose.
Faster, Shared Grocery List
We recently debuted a shared grocery list and with our redesigned app, it works even better. Now your household can have a common grocery list and you can avoid unnecessary return trips to the store.
We’ve added enhancements to make our grocery list easier to use as you add items, sort by department or by recipe, and mark off or delete as you grocery shop:
- Tap on an item to strike it (tap again to unstrike it)
- Edit an item by doing a long press on the ingredient name
- It’s faster — far fewer “synchronizing with server” moments
- It’s local — you don’t have to be connected to the server to use it
- Multiple BigOven accounts can share the same grocery list
We will regularly update the app to add features and improvements. We are in fact in the midst of adding more features to menu planner. Future updates will include: the ability to edit recipes, add recipes from your menu planner to the grocery list, and much more.
BigOven continues to help home cooks get inspired and organized, in the kitchen and on the go. Give our redesigned app a try! Sign up for Early Access if you want to get the latest version before anyone else.
We want to hear from you so let us know what you think! Happy Cooking!
